The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983 by Anthony Kiedis, Flea (bassist), Hillel Slovak (guitar), Jack Irons (drums), and John Frusciante (guitar), who were later replaced by Dave Navarro (guitar) and Cliff Martinez (drums). The Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the most successful bands in the history of alternative rock, with over 80 million records sold worldwide, and are the most successful band in the history of alternative rock, with the records for most number-one singles (13), most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and most top-ten songs (25) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, as well as being the only band in the history of alternative rock to have three consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as three consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
